It is generally accepted that as dental patients, we all "know" that we should be doing the things our dentists or specialists want us to do.

Assuming that the common factors of time and financial resources do not pose or create any pressure, we typically follow through with the things that need to be done.

Life isn't quite that simple though. Work schedules, school schedules, transportation issues and of course, financial issues may cause us to delay or forestall treatments. Generally speaking, the larger the family, the more likely delays will occur.

Forestalling Treatments: Restorative-General versus Reconstructive

General Dentistry

Changing treatment schedules, making them more convenient in terms of ourselves being available or other factors is very common with general dentistry needs. Getting a filling, dental sealants, routine exams, basic bonding or crown repair are treatments that can be successfully administered in almost any kind of time frame.

Reconstructive Dentistry

Complex dentistry, that might include bite and occlusion issues, removal of diseased or decayed tissue, abcess control, repairing damaged tooth structures and repair or replacement of old restorations (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, etc.) should require a different focus.

In general terms, the older the patient, the more likely there are more reconstructive needs rather than just simple restorative dentistry. Normal wear and tear, greater incidence of mild gum disease (75% of adult populations have some degree of tissue disease) and a stronger likelihood of having more comprehensive dental needs.

Tooth replacement treatments which can comprise almost limitless combinations of individual implants, fixed bridges, partials, overdentures, implant supported dentures, immediate function or All on Four... all share the necessity of having disease or infection free tissues (jawbone and gums).

Prevent Worse

The common process of having to remove a tooth due to what started out as a small cavity (most of us have experienced this) becomes more foreboding as we age. Unopposed teeth cause bone loss, loose fitting dentures wear down critical bone structure and mass, faulty bridgework or partials can cause tooth breakage and exposed dentin can accelerate decay.

Gum disease, regardless of severity (from gingivitis to periodontitis), is an agent that is constantly breaking down gum tissue, supportive tissues, bone height and bone mass. Treatment delays involving any and all forms of disease arrest, removal and control invariably cause more destruction .... more treatment needs and, .... increased cost.
